In 1992 Ampex introduced DCT, the first digital video format with data compression using the discrete cosine transform algorithm present in most commercial digital video formats. Sony upgraded Video8, releasing the Hi8 in competition with S-VHS.ĭigital technology emerged with the Sony D1, a device which recorded uncompressed data and required a large amount of bandwidth for its time. Full-size Super-VHS (S-VHS) camcorders were released in 1987, providing an inexpensive way to collect news segments or other videographies. These shoulder-mount camcorders were used by videophiles, industrial videographers and college TV studios. That year, Panasonic, RCA and Hitachi began producing camcorders using a full-size VHS cassette with a three-hour capacity. Sony introduced its compact 8 mm Video8 format in 1985. Kodak announced a new camcorder format in 1984, the 8 mm video format. That year, JVC released the first VHS-C camcorder. It used a Betamax cassette and rested on the operator's shoulder, due to a design not permitting a single-handed grip. Sony released the first consumer camcorder in 1983, the Betamovie BMC-100P. It became standard equipment for broadcast news. The Betacam used the same cassette format (0.5 inches or 1.3 centimetres tape) as the Betamax, but with a different, incompatible recording format. A key component was a single camera-recorder unit, eliminating a cable between the camera and recorder and increasing the camera operator's freedom. In 1983, Sony released the first camcorder, the Betacam system, for professional use. Portable recorders meant that recorded video footage could be aired on the early-evening news, since it was no longer necessary to develop film. Specialized videocassette recorders were introduced by JVC ( VHS) and Sony ( U-matic, with Betamax) releasing a model for mobile work. Although the camera itself was compact, the need for a separate recorder made on-location shooting a two-person job. As technology improved, out-of-studio video recording was possible with compact video cameras and portable video recorders a detachable recording unit could be carried to a shooting location. Video cameras originally designed for television broadcast were large and heavy, mounted on special pedestals and wired to remote recorders in separate rooms. It has no playback functionality and is only capable of recording. Sony Betamovie BMC-110 (BMC-100P in PAL markets) is the first consumer camcorder. Additionally, dedicated units are able to operate solely on external power with no battery inserted. More recent devices capable of recording video are camera phones and digital cameras primarily intended for still pictures, whereas dedicated camcorders are often equipped with more functions and interfaces than more common cameras, such as an internal optical zoom lens that is able to operate silently with no throttled speed, whereas cameras with protracting zoom lenses commonly throttle operation speed during video recording to minimize acoustic disturbance. In 2006, digital recording became the norm, with tape replaced by storage media such as mini-HD, microDVD, internal flash memory and SD cards. The earliest camcorders were tape-based, recording analog signals onto videotape cassettes. It is typically equipped with an articulating screen mounted on the left side, a belt to facilitate holding on the right side, hot-swappable battery facing towards the user, hot-swappable recording media, and an internally contained quiet optical zoom lens. Said Mets manager Terry Collins: “We’re making a slide rule that keeps you on the bag. So even with the new rules for sliding, fielders could end up in danger, as they’ll need to touch the base on double plays or risk a challenge. Such slides are now also eligible to be reviewed using instant replay, but in a controversial move, so is the so-called “neighborhood play,” in which a fielder steps near (but not on) the bag while turning a double play. At the time, umpires ruled that Utley’s slide was okay, but it was later deemed otherwise by Joe Torre, the league’s discipline czar, who suspended Utley for two games. Under the old rules, umpires did have the authority to call a runner out for interference if he “willfully and deliberately interferes with a batted ball or a fielder in the act of fielding a batted ball with the obvious intent to break up a double play.” But it was rarely enforced, as taking out infielders - sometimes in an obvious manner - had become part of the game. Technically, that slide wasn’t legal last year, either. Here’s Utley’s NLDS slide, which under the new rules is nowhere close to legal: Your browser does not support iframes. And he must slide “within reach of the base without changing his pathway for the purpose of initiating contact with a fielder.”.He must make an attempt to stay on the base after completing the slide. The runner must be able to reach the base with his hand or foot - and actually make an attempt to do so.The runner must begin his slide and make contact with the ground before he reaches the base. But perhaps the most important part of the rule is that it states what exactly a “bona fide slide” is in such situations: The rule states that if a runner doesn’t engage in a “bona fide slide” and initiates contact with the fielder in order to break up a double play, he’ll be called out for interference, and the batter running to first will be out as well. (In other words, he can’t focus entirely on taking out the infielder or block the throw.) Although the runner can still initiate contact with an infielder in an otherwise legal slide, he can’t change his path to get to the fielder, or use a “roll block” to take him out. The rule states the base-runner must make a “bona fide” attempt to reach the base. New for the 2016 season is rule 6.01(j), which lays out what a player can and can’t do while sliding into second with an opportunity to break up a double play. Utley was ultimately suspended for two games, but in the moment, the on-field umps ruled him safe, thanks in part to a rule book that didn’t explicitly spell out what a legal slide must look like. 1 in Flushing, where Mets fans were furious over what was widely seen as a dirty play. The Mets would lose that game, and Utley immediately became public enemy No. Last year, in Game 2 of the NLDS, a vicious slide by Chase Utley of the Dodgers broke the leg of Mets shortstop Rubén Tejada, causing him to miss the remainder of the playoffs. Chase Utley takes out Rubén Tejada with a slide in the NLDS last October. During the early access period, Hopoo signed with Gearbox Publishing to release the game on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Hopoo released the game into early access on Windows on March 27, 2019, at the time they estimated that the full development process they would take another year. Items also had to be redesigned to deal with the dimension change. In designing some of the returning monsters Hopoo noted that they had to design new attacks to make them more challenging in a 3D space. The sequel uses the Unity engine, which Hopoo had to learn to use, and 3D levels which the team spent a long time making. The sequel was first announced in May 2017, at which time the team had already been working on the game for 6 months. Hopoo Games noted that the 3D option provided "much deeper design spaces and more possibilities for cool gameplay" as well as more ways to artistically express themselves. They transitioned the prototype from 2D to 2.5D, representing the character in 3D graphics but otherwise playing as a 2D platformer, however this did not work to their satisfaction and felt it was better to move the game fully to 3D, with the transition being relatively quick to complete. Hopoo wanted to use this approach for the sequel, but the 2D graphic approach did not give them enough visual space to work with. The transition to 3D was partly inspired by fan art for the original game that showed the various objects the player collected shown on the character. When they started development on the sequel, Hopoo started with a 2D-based prototype with the player in control of one of the monsters in the first game, as to mix up the formula for the sequel. In the metagame, players unlock access to new playable survivors, items, abilities and game modifiers by completing certain in-game achievements once unlocked, new survivors and modifiers become available to select from at the start of the game, and new items will start appearing randomly from in-game chests. Every few minutes, the aliens' level increases, thus scaling their max health and damage the longer the player's run progresses. The difficulty of the game increases as the player progresses through a run, based on the duration of the current run as well as an initial difficulty scale set by the player. The items collected from chests offer a wide range of boosts to the players carrying them and provide both synergistic effects with other items as well as the potential to stack their effects if multiple copies of the same item are acquired. Currency cannot be carried between levels, as all currency is converted to experience before teleporting to the next level. Currency can be used to open chests found throughout the level that drop random items, or to activate turrets and drones which can either attack enemies or heal the player. Experience is added to the player's level, and if enough is gained, the player will level up, slightly increasing their damage dealt and max health. Each alien killed drops experience and currency which the player picks up. On each level, the goal is to kill aliens while locating a teleporter randomly placed on the level once the teleporter is activated, the players must defend themselves from a larger onslaught of aliens, including bosses, until the teleporter is fully charged. Risk of Rain 2 features several of the same playable characters, creatures, and items from the first game, but also adds new survivors and most notably transitions the game from 2D to a 3D environment. Each survivor has their own unique set of skills, providing different approaches to gameplay based on which survivor the player chooses. There are a total of fourteen survivors, two of which are only available in the Survivors of the Void expansion. Most survivors are locked until the player completes challenges pertaining to each one the only survivors available at first are the Commando and Huntress. Risk of Rain 2 follows a similar approach to the first title, in which one to four players must progress several levels while killing enemies. The game received generally positive reviews upon release. The game supports up to four players in online multiplayer. Over time, the game's difficulty increases, spawning more powerful and dangerous creatures. To survive, they navigate through various environments, killing monsters and looting chests to collect items that boost their offensive and defensive capabilities. Players control a survivor who is stranded on an alien planet. A sequel to 2013's Risk of Rain, it was released in early access for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2019 before fully releasing in August 2020 with a release for Stadia coming a month later. Risk of Rain 2 is a roguelike third-person shooter developed by Hopoo Games and published by Gearbox Publishing. Microsoft Windows, Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One There is a further question around how sustainable these sorts of products are if and when some sort of normality returns to travel. I accept the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy. “Additionally, our comprehensive marketplace is paired with our loyalty program, allowing users to get Carrot Cash on any booking that can be applied across the different travel verticals.” This means we’re able to offer all of these products at an affordable price point for consumers,” he says. “One unique advantage of Hopper is we’ve collected a massive amount of pricing and demand, which allows us to dynamically price every fintech offering. Meanwhile, American Express Travel has introduced its own “cancel for any reason” product, but Hopper continues to stand apart for a number of reasons including its mobile-first approach and “full suite of fintech products that address every customer pain point,” according to Lalonde. The appeal of fintech products is not unique to Hopper as companies look for new revenue streams as well as ways to improve the customer experience.Ī recent study by Amadeus revealed that most travel companies view fintech as high priority and plan to invest more in the area of fintech and payments.Īirbnb, for example, recently expanded its AirCover program to cover guests as well as hosts and added coverage similar to Hopper's “Leave for Any Reason.” Hopper boss Fred Lalonde insists it is not an insurance company and remains a travel company, adding that the latest products “play a critical role in our journey to becoming the first travel super app in North America.” If prices do increase, Hopper pays the difference up to $100, while if the cost goes down, customers pay the lower price. It has also unveiled Leave for Any Reason - a product enabling guests to leave a hotel at check-in or at any time during the stay if they are not happy and book a different hotel in the same category with Hopper covering any rebooking costs.Īnd, to help protect travelers from price fluctuations in car rental bookings, Hopper is extending its Prize Freeze product enabling customers to freeze prices for up to 21 days. The company has added Cancel for Any Reason, already available for flights, to hotel bookings up to the time of check-in and even for non-refundable rates. Hopper is also expanding the fintech products it offers for flights, hotels and car rentals booked in its app. Then, if something does go wrong, travelers can go back to the app and get a refund in the form of Hopper's "Carrot Cash" credit or book another flight.Īll things considered it’s a clever way to gain customers, increase brand recognition and boost revenue via products and services that provide reassurance in times of travel uncertainty. The insurance can be purchased via the Hopper app once a traveler has booked a flight via an airline or other online travel agency. It’s the latter that an increasing number of travel companies are taking note of knowing there will be bumps in the road to the travel industry’s recovery.Įnter Hopper, which is expanding its fintech products with the introduction of "Standalone Trip Protection," enabling travelers to add flight disruption or cancellation protection to bookings made outside of Hopper. Most passengers just want to get to their destination relatively stress free, which seems rare currently, or at least know that they can get their money back if it all goes wrong. Meanwhile, London’s Heathrow Airport has told airlines to reduce passenger numbers by a third at certain times of the day for the next month. In the past week alone, Dutch carrier KLM temporarily suspended flights into Amsterdam Schiphol airport from Europe for a day. A number of the world’s busiest airports are in chaos with cancelled and missed flights at a time when hundreds of thousands of travelers are gearing up for their first trip since before the pandemic. This can be combined with "Chalislime" by using "Chalislime" to discard "Inception", then sending "Chalislime" to recover "Inception", getting two Impcantation effects off. It can also once per turn add itself to your hand from the GY by sending any Impcantation from your hand or field to the GY and then Special Summon a replacement Impcantation from your Deck. In this way it is similar to " Advanced Ritual Art", but using Impcantations rather than Normal Monsters from the Deck. The Ritual Spell, " Impcantation Inception" is used to Ritual Summon any monster, not just "Chalislime", by Tributing Impcantations whose Levels equal or exceed the Level of the Summoned monster from hand or field. While not especially powerful, this can be useful in an emergency, either to avoid the LP cost or to provide reinforcements at the crucial time. It can also be Ritual Summoned to send an Impcantation from your hand or field to the GY to a destroy a face-up monster your opponent controls. This can be used to access any Impcantation without needing to use the effect of one in your hand, allowing you an extra search/recover that turn, but there is a LP cost to this if you don't Ritual Summon afterwards that turn (again discouraging non-Ritual Decks). " Impcantation Chalislime" is a Level 7 Ritual Monster that's main purpose is to once per turn reveal itself from your hand, then discard any card from your hand (itself included) to Summon an Impcantation from the Deck. The player can also give the Impcantations to the opponent with cards like " Creature Swap" to impede their strategy.įinally, in Savage Strike a new element to the Impcantation theme was released: their own Ritual Monster and Ritual Spell card. However, they can be Tributed for a Tribute Summon, especially for " Zaborg the Mega Monarch", which will clear most Extra Decks of resources while allowing the player to use cards like " Herald of the Arc Light". They are not designed to be left on the on the field however, as they have dismal ATK and DEF, as noted above, and they block their controller Summoning from the Extra Deck while they are on the field, an effect that also discourages non-Ritual Decks trying to use them. As their Levels range from 3 to 6 and after their Summon the player will have two of them, their combined Levels make it easy to Summon any Ritual Monster from Levels 3-11. They also make excellent Tribute fodder to help Summon the Ritual Monsters. This helps many Ritual Decks overcome the traditional Ritual weakness of poor card advantage (as unlike Extra Deck mechanics, Ritual Summoning does not end in a +1 from the Extra Deck, and the Ritual Spell requirement makes it worse still) by simply gaining mass plus-ing effects to compensate the loss of Ritual Summoning. Nonetheless, this is an incredible effect combination from a card advantage standpoint, being an almost unheard-of +2, all without Normal Summoning. These effects are exclusive hard once-per turn effects, so the player cannot use any effect of an Impcantation with the same name on the same turn either the reveal effect or the adding effect is used. If one ends up in your hand, it can, by revealing a card of the type in would normally add, Special Summon itself from your hand and any other Impcantation from your Deck. They then add a Ritual Monster/Spell to the hand from the Deck/GY (see above table). The basic effects of the 4 Effect Impcantations trigger when they are Special Summoned from the Deck. They therefore work well with other generic Ritual support like " Manju of the Ten Thousand Hands" in the event the player has neither a Ritual Spell or Ritual Monster. The basis of their effects is to obtain Ritual Monsters when the player has Ritual Spells, and vice versa. Impcantations whose Levels equal 10 by discarding a card.Īs mentioned above, the archetype largely exists to support Ritual Summoning decks, so it's hard to say too much about the playstyle of the archetype, as it largely depends in what Deck they are played in. The first group benefits from the safety of the secure tunnel of your VPN, while the second group enjoys faster speeds and access to local services. More than the average person would care to sit down and learn in one go. There is more overhead in the compilation stage, but the DLL runs directly on your CPU, not on the Mathematica virtual machine, so the results can be even faster. …and use Compile to generate C code.įurthermore, if your code is compilable, then you can also use the option CompilationTarget->“ C” to generate C code, call your C compiler to compile it to a DLL, and link the DLL back into Mathematica, all automatically. On my dual-core machine I get a result 150 times faster than the original the benefit would be even greater with more cores.īe aware though that many Mathematica functions like Table, Plot, NIntegrate, and so on automatically compile their arguments, so you won’t see any improvement when passing them compiled versions of your code.Ģ.5. Using Compile instead of Function makes the execution over 80 times faster.īut we can go further by giving Compile some hints about the parallelizable nature of the code, getting an even better result. Not everything can be compiled, and very simple code might not benefit, but complex low-level numerical code can get a really big speedup. This takes away some of the flexibility of the Mathematica language, but freed from having to worry about “What if the argument was symbolic?” and the like, Mathematica can optimize the program and create a byte code to run on its own virtual machine. The Compile function takes Mathematica code and allows you to pre-declare the types (real, complex, etc.) and structures (value, list, matrix, etc.) of input arguments. It only takes one exact value to cause the whole dataset to have to be held in a more flexible but less efficient form. When working with lists of data, be consistent in your use of reals. For example, solving this polynomial symbolically before substituting the values in causes Mathematica to produce a five-page-long intermediate symbolic expression.īut do the substitution first, and Solve will use fast numerical methods. If you don’t care about the symbolic answer and are not worried about stability, then substitute numerical values as soon as you can. The same is true for symbolic computation. And in this case it gets the same result. Here is a simple example where working with floating-point numbers is nearly 50.6 times faster than doing the computation exactly and then converting the result to a decimal afterward. In Mathematica any number with a decimal point and less than 16 digits of input is automatically treated as a machine float, so always use the decimal point if you want speed ahead of accuracy (e.g. That difference can be pretty important when you hit nasty, numerically unstable problems, but in the majority of tasks, floating-point numbers are good enough and, importantly, much faster. In most numerical software, there is no such thing as exact arithmetic. Unnecessary use of exact arithmetic is the most common case. Of the most common issues that I see when I review slow code is that the programmer has inadvertently asked Mathematica to do things more carefully than needed. Use floating-point numbers if you can, and use them early. I thought I would share the list of things that I look for first when trying to optimize Mathematica code.ġ. When people tell me that Mathematica isn’t fast enough, I usually ask to see the offending code and often find that the problem isn’t a lack in Mathematica‘s performance, but sub-optimal use of Mathematica. |
